Neary Lagoon – My Back Yard

People are often surprised that I live in a condominium complex with a minuscule (although lovely) backyard.  I suppose they expect that, as a landscape designer, I would have a large and lush garden.  Instead, when I walk out my back door, I’m thirty feet away from beautiful Neary Lagoon, a bird (and more recently for a brief time, mountain lion) habitat situated a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean in one direction, and downtown Santa Cruz in another.

I was sad to leave my former home of fifteen years and the garden I’d created there.  We were trading a majestic view of Monterey Bay for the more closed in view of the lagoon and a lot of very close neighbors.  But the lagoon, with it’s abundant wildlife and constantly changing light and texture, is the finest of gardens and my neighbors, as it turns out, are pretty nice too.
